Baby May slowly improves [Jul. 23rd, 2008|06:05 pm]

bakerquest
I have seen May walk on the kitchen floor. She is wobbly and either looses her balance or is in pain and allows her leg to fall out from under her; it is difficult to tell which. She will stand up in the middle of the BSA (baby "safe" area) and will walk a few steps. She looks stiff and swings her right leg around like she is Frankenstein's monster most of the time. Other times she attempts to bend her knee more liberally and she will "cave" and almost fall down into a squat. Then she will pick herself back up.

I know I talk about this alot and explain so much in detail, but that is only because I am getting free trusted advice from the most fantastic PT on the planet. OK, I am also doing it to remember how nervous I have been for the past two weeks and when she is running to first base or pirouetting across the stage, I will truly be thankful.

Jeffrey continues to astound me with his astonishing capacity to read. Every time we sit down with him he learns something new, and every next time he proves that he has retained it. I went to the playground with two friends I haven't seen in weeks since we have been out of town. The kids have definitely missed one another, and they got along like no time had passed.

We are planning some bold activities in the coming weeks which include going downtown to the Pittsburgh Market and a Park down at U. of P. that has free carousel rides after two.

Peggy is as busy as ever and as stressed out as usual. I don't know, I think I might be mellowing with age, but I just can't get so bent outta shape about things anymore. I spend too much time worrying and not enough time enjoying the moment. (Whatever I still stress out)

Speaking of such things: Jeffrey is going to be just like Alex P. Keaton. Mom and dad are hippie-ish liberals and the son a devote Republican. He was enjoying his now standard treat of a Popsicle for successfully using the potty all day with no accidents. He eats it on the back porch as directed by me so he doesn't get sticky hands everywhere. With all the travel the porch has become the junk room and there are various toys and such tossed everywhere. So, I told him he needed to just sit and enjoy his treat and not play around as he could get hurt.

"Daddy. Daddy. Daddy," He called.

I was attending to baby May, "Just a minute."

"Daaaaaaady. Daaaaady. Daaaady," He Begged.

"Hold on," I pleaded.

Silence.
I finish up and poke my head around the corner about 5 minutes after the original request where I see J sitting in his chair licking his popcicle, "What did you need buddy?"

"Um. Well I got up, and I didn't play with anything, but I had to turn the handlebars on my bike because they were backwards, but I didn't ride it, and then I walked back to the chair without playing with anything and I am eating my dessert."

I have done this to him and myself. Son I am so sorry.

Pizza [Jul. 23rd, 2008|11:29 am]

katwomynwa

I've been wanting pizza since last week, but never motivated to do anything about it. When I was driving in to work yesterday I decided I was going to pick up stuff and make pizza. I had some pizza at work, thinking maybe that would do it, but nope, not at all.

So I stopped at the farmers market on the way home and got some yummy stuff. Some lovely Walla Walla onions, corn on the cob, plums, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, tomatos, and some hummus.

Then I went to the grocery and picked up some pepperoni, sausage, ham, and feta cheese.

I came home and put the onions in a pan to carmelize. I cut up some mushrooms I had and when the onions were done, I set them to cook with some garlic. After the mushrooms were done, I cooked up some red and yellow peppers. In another pan, I fried up the italian sausage, then the pepperoni. Cooking the pepperoni ahead cuts the grease on the pizza.

Then I set to making 2 pizzas. One had red sauce, sausage, pepperoni, ham, and peppers. The other had no sauce, onions, mushrooms, peppers, pepperoni and feta cheese.

It fulfilled my need for pizza. *yum* And I'm looking forward to leftovers for lunch.

Care to guess which pizza was mine and which was Sean's? The kids ate the meat one, they like their meat.

Your User Representative? [Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:24 am]

cambler
Your LJ user representative was elected to the LiveJournal Advisory Board to represent the interests of Live Journal users. Promptly upon being elected she closed off all means of users communicating with her. You cannot ask her questions. You cannot make suggestions. She has also not posted anything on votes she has cast, meeting minutes, or any other way of determining she is representing us in the way users really want.

In essence, after being placed in this position through a fraudulent and illegal election, gamed by LJ employees, the selected representative, already an employee of LJ, has said... nothing.

Not a single post. Not a single question answered. Her journal is completely closed and she interacts nowhere else.

Time is now showing that what was feared has come to pass.

Deadliest Catch [Jul. 22nd, 2008|01:39 pm]

So while working from home today, I'm watching a marathon of The Deadliest Catch. How fascinating!

On the one hand, I know for a fact I could never do that. I could never keep up.

On the other hand, how cool would it be to do that for a season? Presume that the money isn't an issue. Just doing a season of hard work, learning that skill, being on the ocean... it's somehow attractive. But something I could clearly never do.

Working from home today, since [info]wondersquid is home.

Had a meeting with [info]seafanna last night to demo the SEAF Artist web site, and she seemed pretty pleased - so I'm going to put in the last of the data items and call the initial phase done. It'll allow for artist registration, art submission, and contain a discussion forum.

SEAF ARTISTS: What forums would you like in the discussion forum? A place to talk about the show, of course, and I was thinking a rideshare/roomshare forum might be useful for traveling artists.

What else?

Great Weekend [Jul. 21st, 2008|03:03 pm]

katwomynwa

So my week started out pretty sucky. I got email Monday AM telling me I have been reassigned to another team for 3 months. Not pleased. Email!!??!!?? Oh well. I'm calming down about it.

I'm totally behind on my photography class homework. Luckily week 3 is a "work week" so I might be able to catch up. I have pictures ready, I just haven't had time to upload them. Wednesday I had a release at work that ended up running into the weekend due to some complications.

Thursday night was a trip to Dinners Ready. I now have a freezer full of meals again. I also inventoried what I had left, about 8 meals, so I can get them used. I fixed 2 of the old meals for dinner Saturday, and pulled out a 3rd for Sunday. I'm sure Ian and Lucy are going to think meals come in plastic bags from the freezer. :)

Saturday we hung around the house and just played with the kids. It was great fun. We are finding that Ian napping isn't such a good thing any more though. He napped for 2 hours and then spent 30-45 minutes melting down after he woke up. He wakes up after a nap much like his father, very grumpy. Then he was up until at least midnight refusing to go to sleep or stay in his room. He screamed and cried after the door was shut or the gate went up. Finally around 11:30 he calmed down about the gate and went to sleep. Without the baby gate, he wanders around the house. Not good when it is sleep time. Sunday night he was easier to get down. But he woke up at 5 and saw that his door was shut (not latched, just cracked open) and started crying. So we opened the door and he went back to sleep. He started crying at 7:30, but again, went back to sleep until 8:40. Changing sleeping habits. :(

Sunday was the Microsoft Company Picnic. We ended up parking just a few cars from Kelley, Eric, and Sophie, so we spent some time hanging out with then. Lucy did not care for the pony ride, but Ian enjoyed it. Then we did a hayride and they both had fun playing with the hay. The petting zoo was a huge hit with Ian. He said he made lots of new friends at the petting zoo. We were going to do a train ride then nab lunch, but opted to do lunch first. After lunch Ian got some sunscreen in his eye and melted down. Everything made him mad, so we decided the day was done. 3 hours was about 2 hours longer than I thought he would last. :) And then he fell right to sleep in the car. So did Lucy. They both got about an hours worth of nap, and were ready to go when we got home.

When we got home we put a blanket in the front yard and played. A couple neighbors came over and sat with us and chatted. One of them had a granddaughter visiting that wanted to swim, so we all went out to the pool. While I was fixing dinner, another neighbor walked by and I told her everyone was out back in the pool (I had forgotten to turn off the sprinkler in the front yard, and she was talking to her son about it) So they joined in the pool fun as well. I spent about 20 minutes by the pool while dinner was cooking (meatloaf in the oven) and then went and finished it. We had dinner, then played a bit more, baths, and then bed. Full day.

Lucy looooves sour pie cherries. I grew up eating bowls of them sugared, and I love them. So does she. I made up a batch on Saturday to have her totally chow them. So I made a bigger batch on Sunday, and she chowed even more. I have about 4 pounds of cherries, and that's a good thing the way she is eating them.

Next weekend we have plans to go to Portland for BrewFest, but Sean isn't sure he wants to go any more. So I guess we'll see how that works out.

holy crap [Jul. 21st, 2008|05:13 pm]

bakerquest
After spending all day in the baby "safe" area with the baby, I was getting a bit tired of kisses. I mean the first 1,000 kisses and hugs she gave me were all special and great, but the 1500th time she pulled my glasses off and threw them over my head...anyway.

So I decided to read the news on the internet, so I could keep an eye on Mary Lynn. She was not walking without support yet, and I didn't want to leave her alone again since her injury. So I poke my head past the doorway to see her laying on the couch now (apparently kissing tires you out). She is watching TV and zombified...then all of the sudden she stands up and arches her back over the couch...a half inch taller and she would have gone straight over the back. I scream "Down!" as she giggles and straightens up while I run to her. Then she stands straight and tall with no support and takes three "normal" looking steps on the couch.

WTF. She won't walk on the ground but she will walk on the couch.

Now she is in the Bouncy Seat. I think I will revoke her freedom privileges of movement until I can reason with her...at least when I have to leave the room.

Shrimp != Bananas [Jul. 21st, 2008|12:18 am]

sallysimpleton
This weekend, I perused the cookbook collection while working on my sunburn. In the "Hawaii & Pacific Islands" chapter of my Goodwill-found The Complete Book of Oriental Cooking, right after Bacon-Wrapped Livers and Water Chestnuts Rumaki, I found a recipe for Banana Cocktail:
1/2 c ketchup
3 T lime or lemon juice
1 T finely chopped scallions
2 T finely chopped celery
2 t Worcestershire sauce
1/8 t Tabasco
3 c diced bananas
Mix together the ketchup, lime juice, scallions, celery, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco. Fold in the bananas. Chill 30 minutes. Serve in lettuce cups or sherbet cups. Serves 6-8.

From college to now, I've counted a number of Hawaiians as close friends. But throughout all those Thanksgivings and Christmases and Easters and post-General Conference potlucks -- not once did any introduce me to the delicacy of the Banana Cocktail. Thank heavens, I'm just so much happier with the recent discovery of Dream Pie. I could eat buckets of the filling alone, instead. Oh, wait, I have!

In researching further, I found a book review here, which led me to such intriguing titles as Saucepan and the Single Girl and Life, Love, and Meatloaf. The latter's dedication apparently reads: "When I am 78 I hope to have his appreciation for a bird, a bottle, and a woman." Indeed.

Although I've been lurking her for some time, this is my first post. We recently revisited our old place of residence, New Orleans, and visited this particular cemetery, the only below grounds one in the city. It shares a parking lot with Delgado Community college, but I'd never known it was there until now.

Although it's showing some signs of tending, it's still in sad disrepair.

Jeffrey amazes me on a daily basis. Tonight we were reading a book, and by "we were" I mean "he was". He started to sound out the word "tube".
J: "Tah-uh-beh-eh. Is the 'e' silent?"
Me: "Yep."
J: "Tub."
Me: "Actually, the 'e' on the end makes the 'u' a long u."
J: (without a moment's hesitation) "tube"

Me: "Well your legs are actually made of bones."
J: "That's right, my foot is also made of bones. They help keep my skin up so my socks stay on."

Beach bum [Jul. 20th, 2008|03:45 pm]

annesblog
I've turned into a beach person. I think we've been to the beach every weekend for the past month. At least it feels like that.

Last weekend, we had a classmate down from that republic to the north that I'm not allowed to say the name of. But, we can use the name of the capital, Skopje. She brought a local friend and we had many jokes about the whole name issue. They spent Friday night with us and then I organized a trip to Nafplio and Tolo for the rest of the weekend. We spent most of Saturday exploring the ancient theater at Epidavros and the Corinth Canal. The afternoon was spent laying on the beach and apologizing to our friends for the 2 clouds that appeared in the sky.

Dinner was in the square in Nafplio. We got there in time for sunset over the bourge on the island off the port. Stunning. I had probably the best moussaka I've ever had. And Jen's friend Igor said it was even better than his mother's!

Sunday, we spent the entire day at the beach. Our hotel was across the street from the sand, but we chose to go further into Tolo beach to where we could rent 2 chairs, an umbrella and a table for 8 euros. Lunch was at the beach (small fish, souvlaki and salad). Dessert was gelato from down the way. We had an early dinner in Nafplio and left for Athens around 9pm. We hit major traffic just outside Corinth and got home at midnight. The traffic added an extra hour, but I think had we left mid-day it would have been a 4 hour trip.

I did pretty well with sunscreen and only got a minor burn on the tops of my shoulders the first day when we were hanging out at the theater.

We learned yesterday that one of our Greek instructors from FSI (the one we spent last year in Tolo with) has been in Greece since last week. So, we were probably 5 chairs down from her on the beach and didn't even know it.

Yesterday, we went to Schinias beach (near Marathon and the Olympic Rowing Center). For some unknown reason, I didn't put any sunscreen on my legs. I had at one point, thought about trying to even out the tan on my legs. But, sitting for 3 hours in the sun without sunscreen is a bad idea. And so I'm paying for it today.

Last night we decided to go to the outdoor theater. It's a popular thing here in the summertime. There are probably 30 or more outdoor movie theaters in and around Athens. The schedule said that Mamma Mia was playing. When we got there, we discovered it was the 1976 Western, "The Missouri Breaks" with Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson. Not the best movie I've ever seen, but it was nice to get out in the evening.

Next weekend we'll probably hit the beach again. It's just a question of which beach.

Friday! Friday! Friday! [Jul. 18th, 2008|05:47 pm]

sallysimpleton
I'm not supposed to patronize the Red Door anymore, but it's where the goodbyes are. I try to keep it to a minimum. One that includes other people buying my treats. Last month, Captain Amy broke a tooth on a hamburger which contained a bone. Ew. Then they turned it into this big thing like she had planted the offensive item there...when all she'd expected was dental reimbursement. They were provoking her to draw out the big guns, but it's since subsided. They were mostly always assholes, yet tolerable. I hate that they had to go and be big, proven jerks.

This weekend is looking wonderfully unscheduled. Tomorrow, we have an evening garden party after possibly hitting up the Bull Moose Festival for the Roosevelt neighborhood, if I should decide to saunter a few blocks over. Sunday is Batman. I think that'll make the 3rd movie I've seen on opening weekend this year. That's some kind of record, some kind of 8 year record for me.

Vegas [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:27 am]

I really want to go to Vegas. I've not been in years and years. I want to see Penn & Teller, Blue Man Group, and hell, even Carrottop. I want to play poker and perhaps a little blackjack and craps just for fun.

Unfortunately, there are two problems with this plan.

My budget doesn't allow for it right now. I have one last debt to pay off, two trips coming up that require air purchases for the whole family, and uncertainty as to how much our Microsoft stock is going to be worth when it vests next month.

And second, I just don't have the time. I might in October or November. But the budget uncertainty will be here through the end of the year unless something kicks sooner (which is possible, even probable, but I've learned not to rely on such things).

But this doesn't change the fact that I still really want a 4-day or 5-day vacation in Vegas.

May's communication [Jul. 18th, 2008|09:23 am]

bakerquest
Mary Lynn has a ton of signs:

Please
Thank you
Cracker (she pats her hand instead of her elbow)
Banana (sometimes she strokes her cheek instead of her index finger)
Apple
Milk (This sometimes means eat or meal)
Food
Water
Down (for getting her out of her highchair or whatever contraption she is in)
Out (For getting her out of the car, or outside - she just points to desired location for these two)
Diaper
Bye, hello
Bath (which looks like she is lathering herself up with soap)
Blows kisses

When I say, "I love you" She puckers and goes, "mmmmmmm" and gives me a kiss.

She said her first word 'cheese' when I pulled out my camera this weekend.

She says "boo" when playing peek-a-boo.

She says "shhhhhh" and points to her paci when she wants that. I think this stems from the fact that we would say, "shhh, shhh, shhh" when we would giver her paci to her and attempt to console her when she was fussy.

Poor Mary Lynn [Jul. 18th, 2008|08:58 am]

bakerquest
I wish her pain would be over. She tried to take a step this morning after pulling herself to standing and she just fell down and cried. Now, she really hasn't tried to stand before and NEVER tried to take a step since the injury 7 days ago, so I am hoping the pain is subsiding and she is just testing the waters and she will improve. Every day has seen improvement in her movement of her leg while seated and of a more normal crawling gate. But she does not stand without support and she doesn't take any steps. I made an appointment with the Orthopedic Pediatrician for Next Friday.

We got home at 12:30 last night after leaving at noon from Charleston. We ran into traffic around Fancy Gap In VA/WV. There is a tunnel which had been reduced to one lane and traffic was at a stop of 5-10 minutes at a time for 5 miles. We crawled forward twice and got close enough to an emergency vehicle crossover, and I performed an illegal U-turn to get back to the exit we just passed. 30 minutes of driving wound us up the mountain, over a beautiful pass, and back down to the other side. We had 3 opportunities to pick 77 back up before we attempted the mountain pass and everyone that took the detour took the last one except us. We continued on over the mountain and rejoined 77 on the other side. Our total delay with 15 minutes of sitting in stopped traffic was 50 minutes. At the next rest stop I overheard some disgruntled drivers complaining of the 2 hour wait. We made the right decision :).

J is still sleeping at 9am which is weird, but understandable with all the travel and missed naps. Mary Lynn went back to bed after a small breakfast and a dose of mortin. Her teeth hurt, she is recovering from an ear infection, and of course her leg probably hurts every time she moves it a certain way.

Dot Me [Jul. 17th, 2008|04:10 pm]

[Tags|]

DotMe went live today. That's the .me top-level domain. It's the country code for Montenegro. Of course, all of the trademarks were snapped-up by those companies paranoid about such things. And then all of the really "cool" names were taken in the landrush where costs were much higher.

That said, there are still cool domains left. Since I get a small discount (and often play with "funny money" when it comes to domains), I registered a few.

CJA.me (my initials)
TFP.me (I'm happy this was available, as TFP is starting to be used as a verb these days)

Of course, "shoot.me" was taken, as was just about every verb I could think of dealing with photography.

And I had a great idea: breakupwith.me, where someone can post an anonymous breakup letter and it will then email a notice to their intended break-ee. Everything will be public except names.

That domain was already taken, too.

Gotta love domain speculation!

From the top-10 Emmy snubs of 2008

No way! This could very possibly be the greatest snub of them all! How could Battlestar Galactica NOT be nominated for Best Drama? The cinematic Sci Fi show wows us on a weekly basis with its flawless combination of butt-kicking action, political intrigue, religious debates, hottie cyborgs, and more “OMG!” moments per episode than any of the actual nominees had in their entire seasons.

Also snubbed? Yup...

On Subscriptions [Jul. 17th, 2008|02:18 pm]

cambler
Imagine that you're making a web site that allows people to subscribe to receive content. You might structure it so that your "subscriber" field can have one of the following values:

1. None
2. Monthly
3. Quarterly
4. Yearly
5. Lifetime

Perhaps you add a new option,

6. Early-Adopter

Much like LiveJournal did. You can then assign the Early-Adopter the same access as a Lifetime subscriber, and maybe even something else that's cool.

Of course, we'll want

7. Complimentary

Are there any other paradigms for doing this that I might be overlooking? Or any other subscription types that I might not be thinking about?

Taking the Fifth? [Jul. 17th, 2008|08:59 am]

cambler
Okay, let me preface this by saying that this is likely a stupid idea - I'm just pondering it and can't immediately think of a reason this wouldn't be an option. Likely an obvious reason ;)

When a census examiner comes to your home, why can't you simply assert your rights under the fifth amendment to the Constitution?

Granted, you have nothing that would, indeed, be incriminating, but there's no way to know that. And if you're asked, "What is incriminating such that you can't answer the census questions?" your answer could still be an assertion of those rights.

Theoretically, if you'd lied on a previous census, truthful answers now might reveal that and subject you to $500 per question fines - so actually, there is a plausible incriminating answer to each and every question.

Again, I can't help but think that this is taking it a bit far - but I wonder. Thoughts?

EDIT: They've already come to my door once, yesterday, and left a card and a note saying to call to arrange an appointment. I'm going to ignore it, though the temptation to call and say, "No, thanks" is strong.

Full Weekend [Jul. 16th, 2008|02:37 pm]

katwomynwa

This past weekend found us busier than I usual care to be. Oh well, sometimes that just happens.

Friday Sean took the day off to visit with his Aunt Susan who was visiting from Baltimore. He, Ian, and Lucy drove in to Seattle to pick her up and then went to the Seattle Center to play for awhile. After they returned home, they all got into the pool. Ian showed his great aunt what a good swimmer he is, after he got done playing her pretending like he couldn't do it unless she was holding on to him. After swimming we went to the pub for dinner. Yes, we take all guests there, we're not very creative. Had a nice visit. Sean took her to her hotel and then came home to pick me up to go out. We had tickets to see Eddie Izzard at the Paramount. It was a good show, and we had good seats. Unfortunately, I was so tired, I was fighting hard to stay awake. My back was also bugging me and I was having a hard time getting comfortable. But still a nice evening out.

Saturday morning we were up early to drive to Snoqualmie to see Thomas the Tank Engine. It was an interesting experience. We had a 9 AM train ride. Where we parked we could see Thomas, so after our ride, we sat by the car and had a snack, so Ian got to see Thomas come back to the station. I have a great picture of him pointing at Thomas as he went by after our ride for the next trip. Saturday afternoon Sean let me take a nap because Saturday night was poker at our house. I'm not sure I would have been able to stay awake until 8 if I had not had the nap. :) It also gave me some needed downtime.

Sunday we relaxed at home. We got into the pool for awhile. Our neighbors brought their 2 little boys over to swim as well. Sean and I got burned as we didn't put on sunscreen. I didn't expect us to be out there as long as we were. Of course we put layers of sunscreen on the kids, but it made it obvious to me when it was time to stop when I started feeling the warmth on my shoulders. The evening we spent in the front yard playing in the sandbox. They love doing that, but baths are required afterwards since Lucy likes to throw the sand in the air. She regularly grabs the dirt from the planters by the house.

All in all, a good family oriented weekend.
